Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States dedicated to honoring military servicemen and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. It is observed on the last Monday in May and will fall on Monday, May 27, 2024.

The holiday originated as Decoration Day, a day set aside to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers and flags. The first Decoration Day was observed on May 30, 1868, at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. In 1971, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which moved Memorial Day to the last Monday in May.
