**Michael Bloomberg Elected Mayor of New York City in 2001** In the 2001 New York City mayoral election held on November 6, Republican Michael Bloomberg defeated Democrat Mark Green. Bloomberg, a billionaire businessman, received the majority of votes in a close race. This victory marked Bloomberg's first foray into politics. He had no prior experience in government but ran on a platform of independent policies. The election was held after incumbent Republican mayor Rudy Giuliani reached the end of his term and could not run again due to term limits. Bloomberg became the 108th mayor of New York City. Eric Adams, the current mayor of New York City, is the second Black mayor in the city's history. He took office on January 1, 2022.
